The Act of This class isn't just Making Multiples, it's exploring the ACT of making multiples. Do some thinking about how you feel about the act of being a machine. You are a machine of mass production, at least, that's the goal. How do you feel about this mode of working? Do you find yourself feeling inadequate or just enough? Have you developed a system or found the most efficient way of doing something? In your experience, is efficiency always the model? Expand upon this in your sketchbook. Respond Read this article and respond. How should we (as a course in the University) respond? Tell me! http://magazine.ucsc.edu/2016/10/liquid-alchemy/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=reviewmag-spot2&utm_campaign=december-2016 Hands
These hands are my tools. I felt the skin collecting, this callous ripped open isn't ever the goal, but the glorious byproduct of hard work. Stinging needles pain. I continue to swing. The burn is of less importance; forever inferior to finishing. How big is it this time? Hopefully noteworthy, battle wounds serve as nice trophies, however temporary. These are my hands. Write about yours. How do you worship them? Have you thought about their importance lately? Which finger is your favorite? How would your partner describe your hands? How would your left describe your right? Do they search nervously for something to pick at? Do they rest peacefully as you drive? The more the better. Artist Research Research the sculptures of Birgit Faustmann. At her most recent show at SB Cast, she has a series of plywood sculptures that almost tesselate. Please familiarize yourself with her work and her statement and use this as a filter to view your upcoming tile project through. Consider the use of multiples throughout her work. Please write some comments/questions out in an email for me to send her way. Thanks! http://b-faustmann.com/default-en.html Why in a different material? What is the importance in creating something and making it out of a new material than it originally was made from. What happens in that translation; that transfer of mediums? Why few? Why might less of something be better in an art context than more? Does better mean more powerful? - more to the point? Why 2 instead of 10? Why 10 instead of 10,000? Why might artists choose to make a certain amount of something. Consider printmakers who make editions. List of Artists
