PROJECT 1
TILES, TILES, TILES!
Due date: Progress check in 1/24
Final due date: Dependent upon project - no later than 2/7
For this assignment you are to make at least 15 paper tiles. You will be creating a tile which contains positive and negative shapes and connects to itself through symmetry, radial symmetry or asymmetry. This tile can tessellated in shape or through the design on the surface. Create a design which is continuous in any or all directions. First we’ll make a tile out of clay, then pour plaster over it to make your mold. In this mold you will press paper pulp in and then allow it to dry. You may make a couple of molds if you desire.
While considering the works shown in lecture as well as the readings, make a sculpture/composition with your tiles. You make bring in additional materials to the piece, but the main medium must be your paper tiles. I suggest you do a test batch with some paper you don’t care about, then consider if you want the content of your paper to influence the work and make alterations. I highly encourage you to come off of the wall and explore numerous planes.
Presentation is still part of the content of this project, but please play first. Consider these tiles as building blocks and please present your ‘failed pieces’ as well.* Use the floor!
Step 1: Make a tile from clay
Step 2: Make a plaster mold of your tile
Step 3: Cast your tile in paper. We will have a shared bucket of brown/grey paper. Your tile may include color, but it doesn’t have to. If you use colored paper, you must use your own bucket to store it in.
Supplies needed:
> Must have:
- at least 15 tiles (5 by 1/24)
- some must be joined with others in some way
- a relief element
- all paint must be approved by me
> Considerations:
- is the number significant to the content/whole piece?
- type/content of the paper
- additive/deductive processes
- avoid decorative imagery
- additional materials
*Document many steps in your process to send to me.
By midnight on your due date, you must send multiple photos of your work to me. Include an analysis of your piece in the body of the email; what you liked, what you didn’t, what your intent was, did you succeed with this intent? Include a before and after shot. [email protected].
Don't make me hunt you down for this. Be responsible.

- tissue paper (color) and any other paper
- sponge and rags
- plastic containers (reuse! yogurt containers, etc.)
- anything can be a clay tool (kitchen utensils, anything with texture, etc.)
- apron if you want, and shoes that can get wet

PROJECT 2
Grafting New Digits
Due date: Progress check in 2/9
Final due date: Dependent upon project - no later than 2/21
Graft or grafting (generally referring to hard work) may refer to:
• Graft (surgery), a surgical procedure to transplant tissue without a blood supply
• Graft (politics), a form of political corruption or bribery
• Grafting, where the tissues of one plant are affixed to the tissues of another
• Grafting (knitting), the joining of two knitted fabrics
• Grafting (decision trees), the process of adding nodes to inferred decision trees in computer science
_________
While considering these definitions, make a sculpture using cast plaster fingers. You may use additional materials in the piece, but the main medium must be your plaster digits. Please present your ‘failed pieces’ as well.*
_________
> Must have:
- at least different 3 grafts
- some must be joined with others in some way
- make at least 20 total digits (unless otherwise approved)
> Considerations:
- is the number significant to the content/whole piece?
- is it important that they are your fingers, or can they be from anyone?
- additive/deductive processes and design principles
- existing architecture/objects
- cast additional materials
