Reflection
Thinking back on this class, knowing what you know now, how might you approach the class differently next time? What materials would you want to work with? How do you feel about multiples now? How do you feel about the new skills that you've learned? Might you use them in the future? Partner Analysis Send your analysis of your partner's work by midnight Sunday (3/19). Make sure you take a photo of your partner's work both at the critique and the show as it may be altered. Discuss these alterations in your write up. Also, use the Questioning Art form to guide you. This should be a critical analysis, not a summary or description of the work. 1-2 pages. Your own Analysis Also due by midnight Sunday (3/19). Same applies above, but you can just have 1 page. Partner Work
This Tuesday you'll be assigned a partner. You'll need to meet with your partner to hear what their plan is for their final project. Please critique them on what they have so far. Ask the questions you'd ask yourself, or the ones you avoid. What might I ask them? Take note. 2 page analysis of their work due 3/19 midnight. Display Ideas Make 10 thumbnail sketches of possible display ideas for your piece. Consider it displayed in my studio and then in other places. Where should it live? Reflection How have you surprised yourself in this class? If you could start over, what might you do differently? Mode/Means of Display Consider how you might want to display your 3rd project. Is it a wall piece or does it live on a pedestal? Remember, pedestals don't always have to be white cubes. What height of the room does it live in? Come up with 10 ideas and do some quick sketches. Multiples in Other Mediums
Consider this presentation (given on Thursday) and write a response. What mediums/artists interested you? How might your Project 3 relate to these? Write a page worth. Looking forward How has your understanding of sculpture evolved since taking this course? How has your understanding of repetition evolved since taking this course? What are your thoughts on object making? Work on Project 3 this week
Email your Project 3 sheet to me by midnight Tuesday 2/28. Also, you must turn in a cost of materials sheet and the amount of time/labor that went into your piece. This is due when you finish your piece, but you should be keeping track as you go. WE need to take a moment from Project 2 to work on 3. I'll meet with you on Friday to figure out how complex your idea is. Then we can figure out how to manage your time appropriately. Brainstorm
Write out 10 idea that you have for Project 3. Circle your top 3-5. Now write out a couple of ways to do the same thing (conceptually) for each. Alternatively, pick 2-3 objects that you want to cast. Then, figure out how to do it. You can add concept and meaning to it later. Maybe jot down a few notes as to why you may be drawn to the object. Play-by-play Write down the order of operations needed for you to complete your idea for Project 3. This will help immensely if you have it done before your meeting with me on Friday. Be specific and include many details. Draw out the steps. Project 3 Sheet Create your own Project 3 Sheet. Use 1 and 2 to guide you. Include a "Must have" section and a "Considerations" section. Also include "Supplies needed" and progress dates. Feel free to write in whatever tense you like, formal or informal is ok. Print and bring to class during Week 7. Free Entry Do whatever you want. Future of multiples in your work Think about what you know now in terms of making multiples. How might this new knowledge enter your work in the future? Create your own assignment as a hypothetical Project 4. Be specific. The more detailed the better. Research Take a look at this page. Read and write a few thoughts. http://www.widewalls.ch/repetition-in-art-artists-photography/
The Act of This class isn't just Making Multiples, it's exploring the ACT of making multiples. Do some thinking about how you feel about the act of being a machine. You are a machine of mass production, at least, that's the goal. How do you feel about this mode of working? Do you find yourself feeling inadequate or just enough? Have you developed a system or found the most efficient way of doing something? In your experience, is efficiency always the model? Expand upon this in your sketchbook. Respond Read this article and respond. How should we (as a course in the University) respond? Tell me! http://magazine.ucsc.edu/2016/10/liquid-alchemy/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=reviewmag-spot2&utm_campaign=december-2016 Hands
These hands are my tools. I felt the skin collecting, this callous ripped open isn't ever the goal, but the glorious byproduct of hard work. Stinging needles pain. I continue to swing. The burn is of less importance; forever inferior to finishing. How big is it this time? Hopefully noteworthy, battle wounds serve as nice trophies, however temporary. These are my hands. Write about yours. How do you worship them? Have you thought about their importance lately? Which finger is your favorite? How would your partner describe your hands? How would your left describe your right? Do they search nervously for something to pick at? Do they rest peacefully as you drive? The more the better. Artist Research Research the sculptures of Birgit Faustmann. At her most recent show at SB Cast, she has a series of plywood sculptures that almost tesselate. Please familiarize yourself with her work and her statement and use this as a filter to view your upcoming tile project through. Consider the use of multiples throughout her work. Please write some comments/questions out in an email for me to send her way. Thanks! http://b-faustmann.com/default-en.html Why in a different material? What is the importance in creating something and making it out of a new material than it originally was made from. What happens in that translation; that transfer of mediums? Why few? Why might less of something be better in an art context than more? Does better mean more powerful? - more to the point? Why 2 instead of 10? Why 10 instead of 10,000? Why might artists choose to make a certain amount of something. Consider printmakers who make editions. List of Artists
Check the Assignments Tab for the List of Artists that you could choose to do your presentation on. Materials Brainstorm! Make a list of all of the materials that you can think of that you can cast with. Bring to class and we'll see what else we can add to it! Rachel Whiteread Watch this video while you work. Jot down some notes on your thoughts. Have you ever thought of your work in this type of scale? Try it out. What did you come up with? Tracking
Chose something to track this week. Maybe it's a bad habit, or a good one. It should be something that you think you do often. Choose three days to keep track, each for a 24 hour period. Set parameters for yourself prior to starting. The goal is to be mindful of our repetitive tendencies as humans. Give yourself lots of space in your sketchbook to do this. Also, write an analysis to synthesis your thoughts of your experience. You won't be required to share what you're tracking, but I'll probably ask what you learned from doing so. Ideas: - water consumption - amount of times you check your phone or a specific account - how often you check the time - every time you bite your nails Process Write out your process. Think of your most recent making endevor. What were the steps you took prior to completion? It's good to have this written down in case you ever get stuck. We'll share in class and add some steps to your process, just in case. Here are some ideas to start you out: - sketch out ideas - thinking about ideas before sleep/in bed - collect materials - make a word map Why Many? Write out your case as to why more is better than less. Give specific examples and scenarios. Research the idea of “less is more”. Where did it originate, who says it, and why. What is your experience with this phrase? Who has said it to you in the past and why. How does it exist in your life? - in your artwork? Be ready to discuss next class. Numbers
What are some significant reasons you can think of for creating a specific amount of things. Create a list of ways to decided on an amount. Zoom in (your Grandmother's birth date) and zoom out (entire world’s population). |
